Title - The port of Marsaxlokk

Marsaxlokk had for centuries, been home to a sizeable fishing fleet. Moreover, in the last decades, it has also been hosting wet bulk operations, recently more so, with the construction of Malta's new, main, power station. Discharge of petroleum products takes place mainly at the Enemalta discharge installation point at Birzebbugia. Apart from this, Oil Tanking (Malta) Ltd. operates an independent oil terminal at Marsaxlokk, which has discharge and loading points along the breakwater pier and offers storage, blending and bunkering facilities.

Photo of an Arial View of MarsaxlokkThe introduction of new shipping trends and large, specialised container vessels meant that, for Malta to take advantage of its position at the cross roads of numerous shipping routes, a new facility for containers had to be built. Marsaxlokk was the perfect location for such facility. In fact today the Malta Freeport Terminal within Marsaxlokk, has developed into a major container terminal in the Mediterranean, equipped with the latest in technology and serving many of the giant operators in the container carrier sector.
