The Malta College of Arts Science & Technology - Maritime Institute provides young men and women with the opportunity to embark upon a career at sea as an officer in the merchant navy - a career that can be both challenging and rewarding.
The Institute accepts applicants with a minimum of five 'O' Levels, including English, Mathematics, Physics and Maltese. After undergoing a medical examination and an eyesight test, successful applicants commence their three year cadetship as Navigating or Engineering Officer Cadets. These three phased courses, with periods at the Institute, alternating with periods of practical training at sea, subject to the appropriate prerequisites may lead to a certificate of competency as an Officer in charge of a Navigating or an Engineering Watch.
Officers who wish to advance further in their chosen career are given the opportunity, once they have completed the appropriate sea-service, to follow courses leading to Chief Mates and Masters or Second and First Engineer Officers.
Once the courses attended are approved by the Malta Administration, these Certificates of Competency issued by the Merchant Shipping Directorate of the Malta Maritime Authority enjoy International recognition and are not subject to any limitations or restrictions. Prospective candidates are advised to follow the link to the list of Approved Courses.
The Institute also offers the professional seafarer a considerable number of short courses, thus enabling officers and ratings to meet the requirements of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, as amended.
The institute runs a comprehensive training programme for the benefit of small craft owners. All these courses have been well received by local and foreign boat owners, with the Yachtmaster (Offshore) Course proving to be the most popular. |
